Pickleball Rules Refresher: Tournament Time-outs

The other day at a local pickleball tournament, I was watching a game where the losing team was obviously dehydrated, losing severely, and playing utterly defensive, and in the end lost the match. Finding out that this was their first tournament in recreational category I asked why they didn't call a time out during the course of the game to get collected or grab a gulp of water. They said they didn't know that any time-outs were allowed in a tournament setting. Do you know how many timeouts are allowed in a pickleball tournament setting? According to IFP rules:
SECTION 11 – TIME-OUT RULES
11.A.Normal Time-Outs. A player or team is entitled to 2 time-outs per game; each time-out period shall last only 1 minute. Then play must be resumed or another time-out must be called by either side. Time-outs may never be called once the ball is in play or the server has started the serving motion. For games to 21 points, each team is allowed 3 time-outs per game.
11.B.Injury Time-Outs. If a player is injured during a match, that player may call an injury time-out. The referee must agree that an injury did take place and that the player is not just stalling to rest or recuperate. If the referee agrees, then that player will be allowed no more than 15 minutes of rest during the injury time-out. If the player cannot resume play after the 15-minute injury time-out period, the match shall be awarded to the opponents.
IFP Comment: A player may take only one injury time-out per match. That time-out must be continuous and may be up to 15 minutes.
11.C.Equipment Time-Outs. Players are expected to keep all clothing and equipment in good playable condition and are expected to use regular time-outs and time between games for adjustments and replacement of equipment. If a player or team is out of time-outs and the referee determines that an equipment change or adjustment is necessary for fair and safe continuation of the match, the referee may award an equipment time-out not to exceed 2 minutes.
11.D.Between Games Time-Out. Between games time-outs shall not exceed 2 minutes between each game of a match.
11.E.Postponed Games. Any game postponed by referees shall be resumed with the same score and remaining time-outs as when postponed.
IFP Comment: When a time-out is called, the referee may request that all players place their paddles on the correct court and the ball be placed under the serving player’s paddle.

Pickleball Paddle Review: S-Type Core 2

S-type Sports founder and CEO Steve Wong has created another pickleball paddle that is causing a flurry of good activity. The paddle is called the Core-2. This paddle is standard size at 15.5" length and 7.75" wide, with a long tacky handle. The paddle material is new territory from their standard composition. Steve Wong has used a fibreglass composition for his paddle, and has again not used his non-trademark viper face. Some customers didn't like having the aggressive viper design on their paddle, so the classy look on this paddle will ease new customers. Playing with this paddle is great, because it blends power and finesse. The fibreglass sends lots of power for those baseline shots, and overhead smashes, yet gives enough pop for those net shots and volleys. The long handle accommodates any size hand, and the gamma cushion bump grip is very tacky, and feels comfortable in the hand. Steve Wong has again created a paddle that will be seen on the tournament circuit to the local rec center. They sell for $65-$75 each.

Pickleball flourishes in Okanogan

At the recent Kelowna pickleball tournament, we were fortunate to meet many great pickleballers in the Okanogan (Kelowna, Penticton, Vernon, Summerland, Peachland, Kamloops.) My 10 year old son Samuel looked after the paddles sales while I played and greeted our Pickleball International friends and customers. It was great to be able to help get legal pickleball paddles into peoples hands, and re-grip paddles, and hear about how pickleball is growing in their hometown. From hearing that 8 new outdoor dedicated pickleball courts in kelowna to hearing about the amount of new members developing in Vernon. Pickleball International says: it was great to finally put faces to paddles, as we strive to become Canada's source for pickleball supplies.

Silver in Men's competitive in Kelowna

At the recent Kelowna pickleball tournament my competitive men's doubles partner (Andrew mcKinnon) and I took silver. We played many great teams from all over BC, and eventually after 18 games finished with a silver. The winning pair was a strong team from Penticton.

IFP rules except all pickleball paddles allowed?

Be careful when attending Pickleball tournaments this summer as some tournaments announce they are using IFP rules (which is good) but then also add the extra that all paddles are accepted (which is bad), meaning that the dreaded and dangerous Apikes & Hush paddles are allowed. This goes against IFP rules, but then again the tournament director can make the call. I will say again that those paddles are overly powerfully when they hit a ball. Many good players are beaned by balls returned from the paddles, and there is such a disadvantage by those paddles. Which is why they are not legal for tournaments in USA or Canada! Many players, myself included stated that they would not return to this tournament next year if those paddles were allowed to return. The key proponents for these paddles argued that wood paddles were more dangerous than their controversial paddles. I have seen first hand the dangers of these paddles. Originally these paddles were designed for the age 70 and 80 year old rec pickleball player that needed something that was less stressful on their body. But take that paddle and put into a young and strong player, and you give them a howitzer. It's not an innovative tool for technique, but instead a weapon. The proponents will tell you that if you play against their paddle it gives you good practice for ducking and jumping out of the way of the non-scary plastic ball. The game of pickleball is not about hitting the hardest possible, and I don't want to be dodging balls, but instead playing a competitive game using my brain muscle to get the ball past my opponents.
